After moving from Stillwater to Berkeley, California, Katie Woodruff is studying political journalism with hopes of becoming an attorney.

During her time at Oklahoma State University, Woodruff was involved in Greek Life, served as homecoming royalty her senior year, and worked at the OSU Alumni Association as the student communications and marketing assistant.

She was also heavily involved with the School of Media & Strategic Communications. She served as president of the Association of Women in Sports Media, chairwoman for the Student Media Board and member of Sports Media Club. She completed two sports media related internships, one with KWTV Channel 9 and the other with Viacom Media Network in New York City.

“I actually came to OSU specifically for the sports media program,” Woodruff said.

After participating in the OSU Sports Media Camp, she knew OSU was where she wanted to go, and sports media was what she wanted to pursue. She even served as a counselor for the camp during her time as a student.

Woodruff is adamant that her education at SMSC prepared her to pursue her master’s degree at one of the top journalism schools in the country.

“SMSC has the best administration, professors, culture and student life,” Woodruff said. “Professor Ted Kian is still a huge part of my life. He always pushes me to do the absolute best, and he is definitely one of the reasons I am where I am.”

From the late nights spent in the Paul Miller Building to picking the editor-in-chief of The O’Colly, Woodruff has invested a lot of time into SMSC.

“Take advantage of the four years you have and get involved because it was those experiences I had that were my best memories, not the classwork,” Woodruff said.

Woodruff married fellow SMSC alumnus Nick Woodruff in June 2016. He graduated with his master’s degree in mass communications from OSU. The Woodruffs will graduate from Berkeley in May 2018 and have plans to move to Houston.
