Murray Ray


Associate Professor

Ray Murray is an Assistant Professor who has taught at Oklahoma State University for six years. He has taught Reporting, Editing, Sports Writing, Feature Writing and Media Style and Structure at OSU.

Before coming to OSU, Ray spent 21 years as a professional journalist in Montana, Florida and Missouri. He was a longtime sports writer and also has worked as a sports copy editor and a news copy editor.

Ray started his career as a sports writer at the Bozeman Daily Chronicle in Bozeman, Mont., and the spent 14 1/2 years in several roles at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. As a sports writer, he covered everything from gymnasts in diapers to seven college bowl games to the Florida Panthers’ run to the 1996 Stanley Cup final.

In 2001, Ray moved to Columbia, Mo., to attend graduate school at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. After a year as the assistant sports editor at the Columbia Missourian, the school’s teaching newspaper, Ray was promoted to sports editor and started graduate school. He was the sports editor for two years, and then worked as a special sections/business editor and news editor in his final year of graduate school.

Ray also taught reporting and editing classes while a graduate student. He had done extensive research on paparazzi in New York City and Los Angeles. He also is interested in sports research.


Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana.
